West End “Wilderhoods”

We work with local experts and neighbours to create richer habitats by identifying native grasses, removing invasive weeds, and building on what is already in existence including introduced species where they provide good habitats for birds, insects, lizards and the occasional echidna!

We meet each month at different neighbours’s nature strips for a working bee and chat, and sometimes in between for special workshops. Everyone is welcome to join at any time for as long as you can can.

There is no cost to participate in these activities. Just bring your curiosity and be prepared to get your hands dirty!

The start of Wilderhoods

Wilderhoods aims to explore ways of working with our neighbourhood to create a climate resilient and biodiverse environment. Wilderhoods is a project of the Castlemaine Institute funded through the DELWP Adapt Loddon Mallee Climate Ready Plan.

The West End Wilderhoods Project began when West End Resilience was chosen to pilot the concept with a series of workshops led by Cassia Read and colleagues in May-June 2022.

After learning the principles and considering a range of options at the workshops we chose to focus on improving the natural habitats of our nature strip verges.
